o fall of his other films of the 1950's, and I saw his films of the 1960's. with the exception of.. three.

Montgomery Clift was magnificent up there on the screen, and although his winning vulnerabil-

con't fron greater because she apparently interviewed more people: she seems to have a larger number of direct quotes. Having the support of Brooks Clift, which LaGuardia didn't, is both a plus and a minus. It is doubtful that Bosworth had read the LaGuar-ity dia biography since both books were published so close together. Her style is perhaps more journalistic than LaGuardia's LaGuardia's style. while basically documentary.seems icher with a vivid vocabulary. Although he doesn't go into great detail. LaGuardia seems to have more knowledge of the .gay scene. Both biographies are sympathetic. but they strive for objectivity and mainly succeed Sometimes minor facts and situations vary.but in essence each biography tells the same story. One biography cannot be recommended above the other; they complement each other.

For someone who witnessed Montgomery Clift's screen career the biographies are particularly interesting. I was a teenager when I saw "The Search in an Ohio theatre on a Sunday afternoon in 1949. I well remember the impact which Clift and the film made on me. I didn't see "Red River" until years after its release. but I saw the first runs

was apparent, there was also a grand self-possession which, alas, he lacked in his life. Little did we in the audience know the turmoil he was going through. While he was the great American heartthrob (a role he detested). the darling of the fan magazines. and was escorting Elizabeth Taylor about, little did most of us suspect, that he had a male lover. Little did we gay teenagers, gay college stuents, stuck so far back in the closet, realize that he was our gay brother. The American dream as manufactured by Hollywood was false to all concerned.

In many ways Montgomery Clift was a victim of the time he lived in. Arthur Miller said that Clift never discussed his homosexuality with him but that he could sense i "He lived in a period. unfortunately, when these things were not acceptable in any disguise." Miller said. "I thought later on that if he had been born ten years later. he would still be alive He was extremely sensitive on that

Score, and had that social sensitivity been different, or the social situation less unacceptable, it may well have been a big difference."

Indeed. well it might!
